There was a female version of Ghostbusters, a movie that flopped horribly. It also didn't help it was getting flap, and negative reviews before it even hit the big screen. Then it was announced there was going to be a remake of Lord of the Flies with an all female cast-the catch is though, it's being directed by men. And now there's talk of a female version of James Bond!
Why do we need the female version of male characters? We have so many talented female writers and directors yet they often get stuck in the assistant role, or a designer role-sometimes even pushed into the acting role. During a time when movie studios, television studios, and even streaming networks are bringing reboot after reboot, are they telling the American population that there are no new original ideas? It's hard to believe just five or six years ago, Rebecca Sugar was the first female to create an original series for Cartoon Network, Steven Universe. And other channels haven't even hit that mark such as Nickelodeon, and Disney. There are numerous shows though based around female authors and their work such as True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, The 100, Rizzoli and Isles, just to name a few. And thanks to HBO and Showtime, women are seeing their voice there in shows like Insecure, Girls, The Girls, The Chi, and of course, The L Word. And even family channels like Hallmark and Freeform have shows created by women, including Meghan Trainor's new show. All of these women prove that there are original ideas that can be produced and shown to the world, so let's provide more opportunities. Professor Martson and the Wonder Woman was a movie that had a large female crew. It was not only directed by a woman, Angela Roberts, who worked on The L Word along side Ilene Chaiken, but it was also written by a woman. Although the movie didn't tell us the budget for production, the movie barely made any money in the box office. It received no more than two million dollars during it's theatre duration. Maybe it's because not a lot of women are interested in working behind the camera such as directing, or producing. That is in fact a good possibility. There was an article about European nations that have very equalized societies, and there are still less females in STEM compared to their male counterparts. If there's a lack of interest then so be it, but if we see motivation and determination in women who have the urge and desire to direct, produce and write then there should be more support to them equal to that of their male counterparts. Today is the day that production begins on A Child Within the Night; it's unsure how long production will begin follow by post-production but we're looking at least two-four weeks, follow by two more weeks for post. What are some of our goals for ACLWTN? Some goals include getting building a good buzz around the film, getting the film accepted in at least two film festivals, and most importantly, distribution.
